A landscape architect and strategic consultant, Michael brings a creative and forensic lens to historical and contemporary sites of value — the history and meanings of individual trees, the social and cultural commitments embedded in major civic buildings, campuses and natural areas, and the challenges of sustaining places whose physical integrity and values are no longer aligned or require extensive rehabilitation.
His practice is considered and inquisitive, always seeking to improve our collective capacity to understand, act upon and renew the values that are at the core of places and communities. Michael often leads project work that disarms common perceptions of heritage as a liability or roadblock, and recontextualises it as a core asset and enabler for institutions, public agencies and the private sector.
Assisting our teams, clients and partners to look at heritage assets with fresh eyes, Michael works to recalibrate the relationship of heritage to fiduciary, commercial and public commitments, including urgent efforts to achieve sustainability and reconciliation.
He leads important ongoing work within the university sector, for public managers of parklands, maritime, transportation and utility assets, and for developments within complex industrial, institutional and public places.
