The 170 hectare Cave Hill Quarry site in Lilydale includes the quarry itself and an overburden dump, limestone processing buildings and machinery, areas of undeveloped land, and an historic farm complex founded in the 1870s by quarry-founder and businessman David Mitchell. In 2014, Lovell Chen completed a conservation management plan for the site and developed an interpretation strategy.
Limestone quarrying and production have been core activities at Cave Hill since 1878, and in the 1880s, the results were pronounced to be the most superior available in “the colony”. The site also served as a rural retreat for David Mitchell until the early 20th century. He is perhaps now most-widely known as the father of opera singer Dame Nellie Melba.
A key focus of the conservation management plan was to adapt a precinct approach to suit the various different areas and historical operations that the site includes. Tailored policies were then prepared for the precincts which will guide future development, and an interpretation plan mapped out to help in the understanding of the place and its components.
