Castlemaine’s Art Gallery is one of the earliest examples of Modernist architecture in regional Victoria. In 1998, the Gallery received support from the Centenary of Federation Fund for redevelopment work and we undertook a programme of restoration and reconfiguration and the design of a new extension. All were completed in 2000.
As a first step, a conservation management plan was prepared to guide the works. Restoration was carried out on both the original 1930s and the later 1950s galleries, and new back-of-house conservation studios, storage and administrative offices provided. The new gallery space flows seamlessly from the old, its proportion and finishes completely in sympathy.
